Located in the central North Island of New Zealand, this national park encompasses a diverse volcanic landscape characterized by active and dormant volcanoes, geothermal features, and alpine terrain. The site was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage property for its outstanding natural values, representing significant geological and ecological features of the volcanic plateau region. The park contains multiple volcanic peaks, including prominent cones and complex geothermal systems featuring hot springs, geysers, and colored thermal pools. Its diverse ecosystems range from native beech forests in lower elevations to alpine vegetation and barren volcanic slopes at higher altitudes. The landscape has cultural significance for Māori peoples and continues to support a variety of endemic plant and animal species adapted to the volcanic and alpine environments.
