Located in south-central Nepal in the Terai region, this natural heritage site encompasses a vast area of subtropical forest and grassland along the Rapti and Narayani rivers. The park protects one of the last remaining populations of the Indian rhinoceros, as well as significant populations of Bengal tigers, Asian elephants, and numerous other species characteristic of the Indian subcontinent's fauna. The landscape is characterized by dense sal forests interspersed with riverine grasslands and wetlands, which create diverse habitats for wildlife. Its exceptional biodiversity and role as a critical refuge for endangered megafauna justify its recognition as a natural World Heritage site. The park also holds cultural significance for the indigenous Tharu people who inhabit the surrounding regions. The combination of ecological importance and conservation value makes it a significant protected area in South Asia.
