Located in the province of La Spezia in Liguria, Italy, this heritage site encompasses the picturesque villages of Cinque Terre, the coastal town of Portovenere, and three small islands—Palmaria, Tino, and Tinetto. The site was inscribed as a cultural landscape in 1997, recognizing the harmonious interaction between human settlement and the dramatic natural environment of the Ligurian coast. The five villages of Cinque Terre, built vertically into steep cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, represent a remarkable example of human adaptation to challenging terrain, with buildings characterized by narrow streets, colorful facades, and terraced vineyards. Portovenere, strategically positioned at the entrance to the Gulf of Poets, contains medieval structures including a fortified castle and the Church of San Pietro, reflecting its historical importance as a maritime stronghold. The three islands offshore add to the site's geographical and ecological significance, with Tino and Tinetto hosting archaeological remains and early Christian structures. Together, these elements form a distinctive cultural landscape shaped by centuries of maritime tradition, agricultural practice, and urban development along one of Italy's most rugged coastlines.
