The Vineyard Landscape of Piedmont encompasses the wine-producing regions of Langhe, Monferrato, and Astigiano in northwestern Italy, centered around the province of Asti. This cultural landscape was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2014 in recognition of its outstanding representation of winemaking traditions dating back centuries. The terrain is characterized by rolling hills with distinctive patterns of vineyard cultivation that reflect generations of agricultural knowledge and adaptation to local conditions. The landscape demonstrates the evolution of viticulture through its field systems, settlement patterns, and architectural heritage, including historic cellars and villages that have developed around wine production. The region's cultural significance extends beyond agriculture to encompass local traditions, craftsmanship, and the relationship between human communities and their environment. The visual identity of the Langhe-Monferrato-Astigiano landscape is defined by alternating rows of grapevines that create a distinctive mosaic across the hillsides.
