Located in the Piedmont region of northern Italy, this industrial city represents a distinctive model of urban planning and design that emerged in the twentieth century. Ivrea was developed by the Olivetti company, a major typewriter and computer manufacturer, which shaped the city's growth from the 1930s onwards through a comprehensive approach to workers' housing, public services, and community facilities. The site is characterized by modernist architecture and functional urban design that reflects the vision of integrating industrial production with improved living conditions for employees. The city's layout and buildings exemplify the principles of industrial paternalism and rationalist town planning that distinguished early twentieth-century European industrial development. UNESCO recognized Ivrea for its outstanding representation of how a private company created an integrated industrial community, combining factories, residential areas, social services, and recreational spaces. The ensemble demonstrates a significant chapter in the history of industrial organization and workers' welfare during the twentieth century.
