This cultural property comprises three monumental sites in Sicily that exemplify the distinctive Arab-Norman architectural style that flourished on the island during the medieval period. The ensemble includes the Palatine Chapel and Church of Santa Maria dell'Ammiragliato in Palermo, alongside the Cathedral Churches of Cefalú and Monreale, each representing a significant achievement in Romanesque ecclesiastical architecture. These buildings reflect the synthesis of Islamic, Byzantine and Western European artistic traditions that characterized Sicily's multicultural medieval society, particularly following the Norman conquest of the island. The sites are distinguished by their ornate mosaics, intricate marble inlays, carved wooden ceilings and sophisticated architectural planning, which demonstrate the technical mastery and aesthetic sophistication of medieval Sicilian craftsmen. Located in northwestern Sicily, these monuments collectively document a unique period of cultural coexistence and artistic innovation that profoundly influenced European Romanesque architecture. Their inscription in 2015 recognised their outstanding universal value as testimony to medieval Sicily's role as a centre of cultural exchange and artistic synthesis.
