Located in the state of Madhya Pradesh in central India, this archaeological site comprises a group of Buddhist monuments dating from the 3rd century BCE onwards. The site is centred around several stupas, the most prominent being the Great Stupa, along with temples, monasteries, and gateways that reflect the development of Buddhist architecture and sculpture over many centuries. The monuments at Sânchî represent significant examples of early Buddhist religious architecture and contain important stone carvings and inscriptions that document the spread of Buddhism in ancient India. The site's visual characteristics include ornately carved gateways, or toranas, which display narrative reliefs depicting scenes from Buddhist texts and the life of Buddha. The collection of structures demonstrates the evolution of Buddhist architectural traditions and served as an important pilgrimage centre in antiquity. The monuments have been identified as possessing outstanding universal value as testimony to the flourishing of Buddhist civilization in India.
