Located in Honduras, this biosphere reserve encompasses a vast expanse of tropical rainforest in the eastern region of the country. The site protects a significant portion of Central America's remaining primary forest ecosystem, characterized by dense vegetation, diverse wildlife, and numerous waterways including the Río Plátano river system. The reserve's designation as a UNESCO biosphere reserve reflects its outstanding biological importance and the presence of numerous species of flora and fauna, many of which are endemic to the region. The landscape is marked by pristine rainforest canopy, river valleys, and wetland areas that collectively support complex ecological communities. The site also holds cultural significance as it is inhabited by indigenous communities whose traditional ways of life remain closely integrated with the forest environment. The reserve represents an important example of tropical forest conservation in Central America and contributes to global efforts to protect biodiversity and natural heritage.
