Located in the rainforests of northern Guatemala, this national park protects one of the most significant archaeological sites of the Maya civilization, spanning the Classic Period. The site encompasses numerous pyramids, palaces, residences and other structures that reveal the complexity and sophistication of Maya urban planning and architecture. Dense tropical vegetation characterizes the landscape, with the tallest pyramids rising prominently above the forest canopy. The park's designation reflects both its archaeological importance as a window into pre-Columbian Mesoamerican culture and its role in preserving a substantial portion of the Petén rainforest ecosystem.
