Located in western Georgia, this natural site encompasses the rainforests and wetlands of the Colchis region, an area of significant ecological importance along the eastern coast of the Black Sea. The site protects a unique ecosystem characterized by dense subtropical vegetation, including endemic plant and animal species adapted to its humid climate and complex hydrological systems. The Colchic forests represent one of the few remaining examples of temperate rainforest in the Mediterranean and sub-Mediterranean zone, featuring diverse flora that includes ancient relict species. The wetlands component comprises coastal marshes, river deltas, and associated water bodies that serve as critical habitats for migratory birds and aquatic fauna. The site's biodiversity and the rarity of its intact rainforest ecosystems justify its recognition as a natural heritage site of international value. This landscape reflects both the geological history of the region and the ecological processes that have shaped the Colchis area over millennia.
