This walled historic city located in eastern Ethiopia represents a significant example of urban planning and architectural tradition in the Horn of Africa. Harar Jugol developed as an important trading center and religious hub, with its urban structure and built heritage reflecting centuries of cultural and commercial exchange across the region. The city is characterized by its distinctive fortified walls, narrow winding streets, and traditional architecture that combines local, Arab, and Indian influences. The visual identity of the site is defined by its dense urban fabric, traditional houses with their particular decorative elements, and the integration of numerous mosques and shrines throughout the city. The inscription recognizes Harar Jugol as an outstanding testimony to the cultural, religious, and commercial traditions of the Ethiopian highlands and surrounding regions.
