This cultural site located in Spain represents an exceptional example of Roman mining operations in the Iberian Peninsula. Las Médulas consists of extensive remains of ancient gold extraction workings that shaped the landscape over centuries of exploitation. The site is characterized by distinctive reddish and ochre-coloured earth formations created by the hydraulic mining techniques employed by Roman engineers, which have left a striking visual imprint on the terrain. The mountains and valleys display layered geological features that document the scale and intensity of extractive activities in this region. The landscape itself serves as historical testimony to Roman engineering capabilities and the economic importance of precious metal production during antiquity. The site demonstrates how ancient industrial operations could fundamentally alter natural geography while leaving valuable archaeological and geological evidence for contemporary study.
