Located in the Sahara Desert in southeastern Algeria, this plateau region is renowned for its exceptional concentration of prehistoric rock art spanning several millennia. The site encompasses numerous caves and rock shelters that contain thousands of paintings and engravings, documenting the evolution of human settlement and cultural practices in North Africa from the Neolithic period onwards. The rock art depicts hunting scenes, pastoral activities, and human figures, providing valuable evidence of ancient societies and their adaptation to environmental changes. The landscape is characterized by dramatic sandstone formations, deep canyons, and natural rock shelters that provided shelter for successive populations. The artistic and archaeological significance of the site, combined with its geological features and testimony to long-term human occupation, constitutes its principal value for heritage documentation and scientific study.
