This natural heritage site encompasses a series of caves and rock shelters located in the Swabian Jura region of Germany. The caves are notable for their significant archaeological deposits containing evidence of human occupation and artistic expression dating to the Ice Age period. The site is characterised by its exceptional preservation of Paleolithic art and artefacts, including carved figurines and decorated objects that document early human cultural development. The limestone karst landscape of the Swabian Jura provides the geological setting for these caves, which have been naturally formed through water erosion over millennia. The archaeological material found within these sites offers important scientific evidence for understanding human behaviour and artistic practices during the Glacial period. The caves represent a substantial archive of Pleistocene human activity in Central Europe and continue to yield valuable information for prehistoric research.
