Natural

Located in the Sichuan Province of central China, this natural heritage site encompasses three protected sanctuary areas: Wolong, Mount Siguniang, and the Jiajin Mountains. These reserves form a critical habitat for the endangered giant panda, along with numerous other endemic and threatened species adapted to the region's steep terrain and diverse ecosystems. The sanctuaries span from subtropical forests at lower elevations to alpine meadows and rocky peaks at higher altitudes, creating distinct ecological zones within the mountainous landscape. The site's significance lies in its role in preserving one of the world's most important populations of giant pandas and maintaining the biodiversity of the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau. The dramatic geography, characterized by deep valleys and towering peaks, has historically limited human settlement and development, allowing these remote areas to retain their ecological integrity. These interconnected reserves collectively protect a representative example of temperate mountain forests and their associated wildlife communities.
