Located in the Northwest Territories of Canada, this national park encompasses a vast wilderness area characterized by dramatic mountain terrain and deep river valleys. The site is notable for its pristine natural environment, featuring the South Nahanni River, which has carved spectacular canyons through the surrounding landscape. The park's geological formations include karst topography with numerous caves and sinkholes, as well as steep canyon walls that rise significantly above the river valley. The region supports diverse wildlife populations and contains important examples of boreal and subarctic ecosystems in their natural state. The combination of geological significance, hydrological features, and ecological integrity has justified its recognition as a natural World Heritage site, representing an outstanding example of northern wilderness landscape largely unmodified by human activity.
