Located on the southern coast of Brazil in the state of Rio de Janeiro, this natural site encompasses the coastal region of Paraty and the island of Ilha Grande, representing a significant area of Atlantic tropical forest and marine ecosystems. The site is characterized by dense forest vegetation, numerous rivers, waterfalls, and a complex system of islands and coves that support exceptional biodiversity. The region's isolation and varied topography have allowed the preservation of distinct ecological communities, including endemic species of flora and fauna adapted to both terrestrial and marine environments. The coastal landscape features colonial architecture in the town of Paraty, which reflects the area's historical importance as a colonial port, though the primary focus of this natural designation lies in its ecological value. The combination of pristine forest habitat meeting Atlantic waters creates a distinctive biome of international scientific interest, supporting numerous species of birds, mammals, amphibians, and marine life. The site represents a critical conservation area for the Atlantic Forest biome, one of the world's most threatened tropical ecosystems.
