Natural

Located off the coast of Brazil in the Atlantic Ocean, this site comprises two distinct marine reserves: Fernando de Noronha and Atol das Rocas. Both reserves protect unique ecosystems of significant biodiversity value, featuring endemic species and important marine habitats that support diverse populations of fish, seabirds, and marine mammals. The archipelago of Fernando de Noronha is characterized by volcanic origins, with dramatic rocky formations rising from the ocean, while Atol das Rocas represents one of the South Atlantic's few coral atoll systems. These reserves are recognized for their exceptional natural characteristics and the role they play in preserving Atlantic marine environments. The sites are protected as part of Brazil's commitment to safeguarding critical natural areas and maintaining the ecological integrity of the Atlantic basin.
