Koutammakou is a cultural landscape located in northeastern Benin, in the Atakora region, inhabited by the Batammariba people. The site is distinguished by its unique architectural tradition featuring fortified mud tower-houses known as tata, which serve both defensive and residential purposes. These structures represent a remarkable example of indigenous building techniques adapted to the local environment and social organization of the Batammariba communities. The landscape encompasses not only the distinctive settlements but also the associated agricultural lands and sacred sites that form an integrated living system. The Batammariba have maintained their traditional way of life, including their architectural practices and land use patterns, across generations. The site reflects the deep connection between human settlement, cultural practices, and the natural environment of the West African savanna.
