Located on the east coast of Australia, this site encompasses a series of rainforest reserves that preserve ancient Gondwanan vegetation dating back millions of years. The forests represent a living link to the prehistoric supercontinent Gondwana, containing plant and animal species of exceptional scientific interest found nowhere else in the world. The site is characterized by subtropical and temperate rainforest ecosystems with dense canopy layers, diverse understory vegetation, and unique fauna including primitive marsupials and endemic bird species. These forests demonstrate the ecological and evolutionary processes that have shaped Australia's natural heritage since the continental breakup of Gondwana. The reserves protect watersheds critical to the region and maintain ecosystems adapted to high rainfall and humid subtropical conditions. The site's inscription recognizes its outstanding universal value as a repository of ancient biodiversity and as a natural laboratory for understanding evolutionary history.
