The Memorial of Deportations is housed in a blockhouse built by the German army in 1943, located at the foot of Fort Saint-Jean in Marseille, facing the old neighborhoods destroyed during World War II. Now recognized as a place of memory, it is dedicated to transmitting the history of men, women and children arrested and deported for reasons of religion, political engagement or resistance. The permanent exhibition, renewed since its opening more than twenty-five years ago, presents films, testimonies from victims and documents relating to the roundups of Jewish communities, the occupation and deportations, particularly the tragic events of 1943. Designed as a dynamic space in constant evolution, the memorial regularly enriches its content and displays. Admission is free and the museum is open Tuesday through Sunday.
