Musée Rabelais

The Rabelais Museum, located at La Devinière in Seuilly in Indre-et-Loire, is the only French museum dedicated to François Rabelais, a major figure in French literature. Listed as a Historical Monument, it occupies the presumed birthplace of the writer, around 1483 or 1494, and the landscape that inspired the novel Gargantua. The site includes a remarkable set of buildings from the 15th century and modern times – mansions, dovecote-barn, troglodytic dwellings, cellars – surrounded by gardens, orchards and vineyards. This museum in a rural setting offers free or guided visits, family and outdoor tours, as well as temporary exhibitions. The visit allows visitors to immerse themselves in the Rabelaisian universe and in the historical and landscape context that nourished the author's work.
