Musée Alice Taverne

The Alice Taverne Museum is located in Ambierle in Loire, in a village of character. Opened to the public in 1951, it is housed in an 18th-century bourgeois house and bears the name of its creator, Alice Taverne, who from the 1930s onwards collected objects bearing witness to rural daily life and conducted surveys on the customs and skills of the Roannais, Forez and Loire regions. The permanent collections recreate the atmosphere of peasant and village life from 1850 to World War II, staging the daily life of women, workshops of traditional crafts—clog maker, wheelwright, cooper, milliner—as well as village shops and institutions. The museographic layout, created by Alice Taverne without institutional resources, is characterized by an original presentation of popular arts and traditions, inviting visitors to walk through the rooms as if through the living spaces of yesteryear.
