Located in the Indian Ocean, this natural site on Reunion Island encompasses a dramatic landscape of volcanic peaks, steep-sided valleys, and defensive escarpments that showcase exceptional geological processes. The property consists of three main geographical features: the Pitons (volcanic peaks), the Cirques (large amphitheater-shaped valleys), and the Remparts (steep cliff faces), which together represent outstanding examples of shield volcano erosion and landscape formation. The site was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2010 based on its geological significance and the way these interconnected landforms demonstrate the evolution of volcanic islands in tropical environments. The landscape reflects complex erosional patterns shaped by water and gravity over millions of years, creating a distinctive terrain that remains largely undeveloped and ecologically significant. The cirques in particular, such as Mafate, Cilaos, and Salazie, represent some of the world's most impressive examples of this geological feature, carved into the volcanic plateau by water erosion. This natural heritage site provides important insights into the geological and ecological processes that have shaped Reunion Island's unique environment.
