Located on the western coast of Corsica in the Corse-du-Sud region, this natural site encompasses three distinctive coastal areas: the Calanche of Piana, the Gulf of Girolata, and the Scandola Reserve. The site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983 for its outstanding geological formations and exceptional biodiversity. The landscape is characterized by dramatic red granite cliffs and rock formations that rise steeply from the Mediterranean Sea, creating a striking and visually distinctive coastline. The Scandola Reserve, the first marine reserve established in France, protects important marine ecosystems and represents a significant example of Mediterranean coastal geology. The combined areas support unique flora and fauna adapted to the specific conditions of this coastal environment, while the geological formations provide evidence of the region's complex geological history.
