Musée
Cavaillon · Vaucluse · Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur

The Comtat Jewish Museum is located in the Cavaillon synagogue in Vaucluse. It occupies the upper room of the building, while the lower room, formerly reserved for women, also served as a community bakery, as evidenced by a marble kneading table and a matzah oven that still remain. Founded in 1963 by the Jouve family, the museum presents collections consisting mainly of prayer books from the 17th and 18th centuries, liturgical manuscripts, religious objects (tefillin, mappa, rimonin, Torah mantles) and tabernacle doors from the original synagogue. A significant portion of the collection comes from the "cemetery of books" (geniza) discovered in the 1930s. The museum has also received funeral steles and various acquisitions from descendants of the Jews of the Pope. The institution has recently undertaken conservation and cleaning work on its spaces and collections.
