The Museum of Natural History in Chambéry, managed by the Society of Natural History of Savoy, has been housed in the royal castle of Chambéry since 1851. Its collections comprise more than 300,000 specimens covering several disciplines of natural sciences: botany, paleontology, mineralogy, geology, entomology, ornithology, and conchology. The museum occupies two floors: the ground floor presents marine worlds and minerals, while the upper floor houses the zoology and entomology rooms, whose furniture dates from the museum's opening. The collections come from around the world, with a notable proportion of Savoyard specimens resulting from research conducted locally. The site also includes a historic garden inherited from the castle gardens, originally developed as a botanical garden and zoological park.
