The Citadelle de Villefranche-sur-Mer is an art center and museum housed in a 16th-century fortress, classified as a Historic Monument since 1968. Demilitarized in 1967, it has hosted fine arts collections since 1981 labeled as "Musées de France," covering a period from the 16th to the 21st century. The museum notably preserves the Boumeester-Goetz collection, bringing together works by 20th-century masters, the Volti Museum Foundation dedicated to sculpture, as well as municipal collections documenting local history and the work of Jean Cocteau. Beyond its collections, the Citadelle functions as a contemporary art center, offering artist residencies and temporary exhibitions across its three hectares. The museum route is currently undergoing renovation since January 2022, with a first phase opening scheduled for 2028.
