Val-de · Isère · Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The Museum of the History of the Galosh is located in a dependency of the medieval castle of Virieu, in the Bourbre valley, in Isère. Opened in 2019, it is the only French ecomuseum dedicated exclusively to the history and manufacture of the galosh. The collections present the evolution of this shoe through three periods: entirely manual production until the end of the 19th century, mechanization of the 20th century until 1970, and contemporary techniques for manufacturing rubber soles. The museum brings together machines, tools, objects and documents illustrating the expertise of galosh makers and the importance of this craft industry in the region. Visits, conducted by volunteers, include demonstrations and allow an immersion into the working conditions and way of life of the workers.
