The Diocesan Museum of Religious Art in Blois is located on the first floor of the former Jacobins convent, founded in 1273, situated between the castle and the Loire River. Created in 1932 for the training of seminarians, it brings together collections tracing two thousand years of artistic creation inspired by Christian faith: religious statuary, liturgical goldwork dating mainly from the 17th-19th centuries, liturgical ornaments and objects of popular devotion. The museum notably preserves more than seventeen hundred textile pieces, including remarkable embroideries created in the 17th century by the Carmelites of Blois, as well as an important collection of paperoles and canivets, small works of cut and relief paper created by contemplative nuns. The collections encompass all aspects of ancient religious life, from chalices to medals including sailor's crosses and bedside holy water fonts, testifying to the daily devotion of the faithful.
